What IS Divine light? Did you ever get an answer for that one?
ReplyDeleteAs far as the film "The Fifth Element" goes, divine light is a unity made of the four elements of the Western tradition (fire, earth, air, water) and a fifth - Love. Curiously, in classical Chinese medicine, five elements have been maintained, the cardinal four of the West, and Metal. In pre-Socratic Greece and Babylonia, there was a fifth called Aether or Sky, respectively. Why is Metal absent from the Western tradition? Perhaps it isn't - we speak of love as an attraction, an ethereal yet visceral substance. Metal is magnetic, and it is this property of the material which extends into the unseen, the attraction in the substance and of the substance. Christianity has at its central tenet that "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son," his divine light, his Love, this fifth element which reveals the connection, as in metal, from the physical to the metaphysical.
